Lonely Furrow

I’m ploughing a lonely furrow,

ploughing it for years

Nobody comes to this far-off,

deserted place, not even those

who once belonged here.

Do they think I’m an outlier,

clinging to unyielding soil,

guided by antiquated notions?

Am I marching to the beats

of an antique drum?

I’m ploughing a lonely furrow,

ploughing it for years.

Nobody will come this way,

nobody but you. Who  else

will traverse all this distance?

Once I saw someone coming;

then he turned back. A traveller,

perhaps, who had lost his way.

Once I heard your voice. I left

the plough, rushed to meet you.

But it was a hallucination.

Still I wait and listen, ready

to meet you  more than half-way,

leaving the plough mid furrow.

Tarred

Some are tarred

with the same sable brush,

some others with synthetic brushes

of different shapes and sizes.

What difference does it make?

It’s tar, black and viscous,  all over.

You have no choice.

First Winter

Alone in the apartment,

he pulls up the venetian blind

and peers through the window.

It’s past three-thirty  but already

dark. The snow has piled up,

about a foot high; the air is thick

with snowflakes flitting and falling.

The bare branches of the trees

are white ghosts shaking their fists.

White. white everywhere, against

the encroaching dark. The forecast

gloomy: more snowfall and

high-velocity winds. When will

they return, the inmates? The flights

are delayed or cancelled. Spring is

months away. What a contrast!

There, in his village, several seas

and continents away, it is the time

of mists and temple festivals.

And once again, he is a boy,

devouring those sights and sounds.

But no, he shouldn’t get tied

to the apron strings of the past.

Here, in this land of opportunities,

he should work his way up.

But, at this moment, alone

in the apartment, snow falling

all around and wind whooshing,

he feels lonely like an exile

and yearns for home.
